We’ve all heard the phrase “married to our job.” For many people, the hard truth is that one-third (or more) of our time as adults is spent at work, and at times you may even spend more time with your work family than your nuclear family. There are quite a few similarities between the two types of relationship as well. Employees want a job that provides a sense of meaning and offers them the opportunity to feel accomplished, fulfilled and satisfied. These same desires are commonly expressed in romantic relationships. Likewise, in each of these relationships, we want to wake up each day with some level of excitement and anticipation about the hours ahead.

Super Bowl LIII has come and gone. For the past few weeks, there existed varying degrees of fanfare around the different elements that combine to make up Super Bowl Sunday. Then, on game day, cohorts congregated across the country for watch parties. Many tuned in solely for the commercials and half-time performances or tagged along with friends for the appetizers and camaraderie. Even those with no affinity for sports had the chance to gain something from the day by cheering on the competitors in Puppy Bowl XV!

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.” This quote by author Melody Beattie serves as a precious reminder of this month’s theme, giving thanks. Much can be unpacked in this quote as it relates to one’s personal endeavors, but it also has practical applications to the professional sphere, especially with regards to employee recognition.
